I just finished my latest Disney painting and couldn’t be more thrilled about it! 🙂 It is from one of my favorite animated films, Moana. The palette knife painting depicts a grateful Tafiti with her hand on her heart standing proud over the mountainside, as Moana sails away on her raft.
I crammed it full of color, texture, and detail, but before I show the final image, here are some progress photos for you to enjoy.
Here is my initial sketch. You can already see the drama and excitement that I wanted to convey here. In the actual movie Tafiti goes to sleep and becomes part of a mountain before Moana gets back on the ocean. Here, I wanted to have her towering in the distance watching Moana sail away! I felt it was much more powerful. After all, she just got her heart restored!
With detailed and elaborate scenes like this, I always like to start by painting the sky around the figures. I added some cool clouds to give the sky more detail.
At this point I wanted to block in the distant mountain (keeping it very light and airy since its far away) and the mountains in the foreground that Tafiti is standing behind. Now I will move up to start working on Tafiti 🙂
After added some trees and waterfalls in the foreground, I started Tafiti with a base mid-tone green. From there I will add all of the intense shadows and light to bring her to life!
And here she is completed! You can see her headband of beautiful flowers as well as her gown of lush green leaves and vines. Notice the intense light coming from the left, which is where the sun is. The entire left side of her body is illuminated.
I skipped a few steps, but here you can see the majority of Moana’s vessel blocked in. Of course I had to add the official Moana logo to the mast. The foreground water will be darker and the background sea water will be lighter, since it is in the sun.
And without further ado, here is the finished painting of Moana and Tafiti!
The waves crashing against the raft, the rope she’s pulling on, and her hair blowing in the wind—make for an action-packed and thrilling image! I am very proud of this one.
I hope you guys enjoyed seeing her progress from start to finish!
Also, here is my new YouTube video that I just posted today of a beautiful tropical moonlit beach. Be sure to check it out and lend some support!
It’s been so amazing painting Ariel and Moana. It just makes me realize how much more I love Disney animated films with every passing day. I hope all of you have a great weekend. Let’s make the most of what’s left of the summer! It goes very fast here in Michigan.
Until next time,
let’s bring some color into the world.
