“Above the Sea, above the Sea!”

So I decided to paint my very first Disney scenes using palette knives. And since “The Little Mermaid” is one of my favorites of all time, I figured I would try my hand at painting Ariel, Flounder, and Scuttle!

I’m very excited to go on this journey here, but I’m equally nervous to step OUTSIDE of my comfort zone and paint my first girl with a knife, even if she is part fish!

As you can see from the initial sketch, my painting will be inspired by the infamous crashing wave scene after Ariel rescues Prince Eric. You can see Flounder jumping out of the water below her, and scuttle on the wing a little farther behind.

I don’t want this piece of art to scream Disney. I want to make it my own, imbuing it with the signature Ryan Kimba tropical knife style that has truly become my voice. So it will definitely look like something that I did. I don’t even care if Ariel looks like she does in the movie. If she looks way different, I am totally fine with that!

Be sure to stay tuned for future posts as I work on this. I will post when Ariel is finished and also when the entire scene is done. With that last one I will post all 3 pictures together so that you can see the progress.

I’ll talk to you guys soon,

And as always,

let’s bring some color into the world!

We are artists. That is our job 🙂
