Go Big or Go Home!

I recently ran out of stretched canvases and finally got my new shipment in today. It took me a couple of hours to paint all of the sides black to get them prepped for painting.

Needless to say, I am SUPER excited to get started on these bad boys!

I’ve been working on small 11×14″ canvases for a while, which is the size I use for my YouTube videos. But they just aren’t the same! I’ve loved painting on larger surfaces over the past year and I have grown an awful lot as a palette knife artist. I have each canvas labelled with the particular scene I will paint on it.

That large canvas in the corner is reserved for a huge humpback whale breaching in the sunset! It is going to be colorful, massive, and epic! I can’t wait to do that one. I’ll be sure to post step-by-step entries on my blog when I officially start working on it.

Also, be sure to watch my new speed painting on YouTube of a beautiful Monarch butterfly on the beach.

So pumped to start working on these larger surfaces!

Until next time,

What *colors* do I use?!

I often get comments and emails from artists asking what colors I use, since I don’t typically talk about them in my speed painting videos on YouTube. So I decided to shoot a color mixing demo chronicling the staple paints on my palette.

You can watch it below!

Here are the oil colors that I use for every painting, and also some miscellaneous ones I use sparingly. It also includes the actual brands that I use as well, in the Lukas, Williamsburg, and Old Holland paint lines.

 Color Palette

In the video I also talk about what I love to use each color for in my beach paintings. I’ve learned the colors an artist chooses is a very personal thing and says an awful lot about them. A lot of it is unconscious.

I hope you enjoy the video and I will talk to you guys soon. I’m interested to hear what your favorite colors are. And until next time,

Let’s bring some color into the world!

Underwater Painting FINISHED!

I’m happy to say that I’ve wrapped up the largest oil painting I have done so far. All in all I’m very proud of the way it turned out, as it really helped me stretch and expand as an artist! In the top photo I finished the details in the coral and the two spotted dolphins in the foreground. And in the final photo I added in a plethora of reef fish and bubbles throughout the painting.

This is very close to the original vision that I had in my head before I started. Continue reading to see the initial sketch and the final product!

And the best part is…I did it all with a palette knife!!! Such a blast! 🙂

Thanks for following me as I have been painting this beautiful coral reef! It was cool to see my process advance as I added in the details.

I hope you all have a wonderful July 4th!

Until next time,

Underwater Painting, Part 3! :)

20180516_204213.jpg

As you can see, my large underwater painting is coming along nicely. You can see that most of the sea creatures are done except for the dolphins in the foreground. A lot of the detail in the coral is done also. I just have to come in and do the light and bubbles off of the coral.

I’m still having an absolute blast with this piece. A grandiose project indeed! But I think it will be pretty epic when it is done.

Let me know what you guys think so far!

Part 4 will be a couple more photos up until completion of the project. Thanks for staying tuned so far throughout the painting. Don’t forget to check out my shop for 40% off original art. Only 10 days left!!!

I’ll be back on here next week.

But until then, let’s bring some color into the world!

Underwater Painting, Part 2!

20180515_191911

So my largest painting to date is going pretty good so far. As you can see here, the water and background are largely done, except for the vast coral reef. You can really see the outlines now for all the sea creatures! I painted around them and will finish them last.

I seriously underestimated the scope of this project! I already have about 10+ hours in here, and that is the least of it. All of the animals will take many more hours than that to complete.

But it’s okay, I’m having a blast so far!

Be sure to stay tuned for my next post. The orca, manta ray, and sea turtles should be done by then. I hope whatever project you are working on is going just as well as mine 🙂

And don’t forget to check out the HUGE 40% off sale going on in my Etsy shop for the month of June!

My LARGEST painting to date!

So I’m starting this massive canvas, which is 30×40″ in size, the biggest painting of my young career so far! I know—it isn’t that enormous, but for me it is. I’m used to working on 9×12’s, 11×14’s and 16×20’s. I’m looking forward to growing and developing as an artist with this colossal project. After all, I have a LOT of work ahead of me.

Here is a picture of the rough sketch of the underwater scene.

20180513_230028.jpg

As you can see, there will be dolphins in the foreground, sea turtles, a shark, an orca, and a manta ray. All of the creatures will be swimming “into” the scene, which I think will make the peace more welcoming. There will be a sea arch and a large and colorful reef, not to mention a bunch of colorful reef fish swimming around.

The sheer scope of this project will be very *BIG*, as there are a LOT of moving parts. But I know I will have the time of my life working on it. Stay tuned for future progress posts as I go along with this bad boy.

Also, I am having my first ever shop-wide sale in honor of summer and beach season. For the month of June all of my work will be 40% off, plus my every day FREE shipping! So check out my latest work below when you get the chance.

Little Mermaid Painting—-Complete!

I’m very pleased to reveal to you the finished product of my two-week-long project painting a scene from “The Little Mermaid.” I fixed Ariel’s face and now she no longer looks like a red-headed Keebler Elf, which is always a good thing. Actually, she is looking pretty sexy if I do say so myself! 😉

Below the painting I added a close-up shot so you can see the beautiful colors and characteristic textures as they were meant to be seen.

But first, here is the initial sketch again, so you can see just how far I have come!

I’m super proud of this painting and I feel like it captures the true excitement and spirit of the film! But I really made it my own which was a special experience for me, seeing as the animated film is one of my favorite movies of all time!

I hope you guys had fun coming along on this adventure, and I’ll be sure to post some pictures of my next project. My next BIG project! I will be painting an underwater coral reef scene on a 30×40″ canvas, the biggest painting I have ever attempted so far in my young career! It will have dolphins, reef fish, sea turtles, a shark, a manta ray, and an orca!

It should be very epic indeed!

I hope all of you are doing well and creating some awesome art as well, writing some great content for your blogs, and  just plain having an excellent week!
