The Proof is in the Pudding! Always :)

If you want to find out everything you need to know about a person, all you have to do is watch what they do. Their actions will tell you all of the important info. Why? Because the proof is in the pudding. Always has been, always will be.

I have a little brother Troy who is always talking about how he wants to be a success, make a difference in the lives of others, and feel better about himself. But then when you ask him who is role model is, he will announce emphatically, “Eminem.” Now I’m not knocking Eminem, but any smart and reasonable person would conclude that that doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.

Now if Troy said “Oprah, or Will Smith, or Tony Robbins,” well, that would be a much different story. We would say “Ah hah, I understand! Best of luck to you!”

Magic in the AirNew painting, entitled “Magic in the Air.” Oils on canvas 18×24 inches

Let’s say you have a close friend and she tells you that she wants to lose weight and feel great about herself. How can you tell if she is serious? And the answer is, take her out to lunch. If she orders a plate of cheese sticks, some ribs and a couple of pepsis, you will know for sure. But if she orders a turkey club sandwich with tomatoes and pickles, a small chef salad with fat-free dressing, and a TALL glass of ice water, you would then say “let me know is there is anything I can do to help!” You would know she is serious about her aspirations.

Take me, for instance. My dream is to be a world-famous artist and to be the premier beach painter in the country. And if somebody followed me into my studio they would see that my actions correspond to that particular vision. They would see me paint 5-10 originals a week, make one video a week for Youtube, blog, market, and network myself, and work hard on my Etsy shop to get my work sold around the country.

That same person would exclaim, “Okay! This guy is serious.”

So my question is…how serious are you about what you want in your life? And most importantly, do your actions dictate your wants? Remember, to get the answers you want, just look inside of the pudding. They will be there every single time!

The most common *myths/lies* in ART

So with this entry I’d like to strike at the heart of the countless misconceptions that artists believe are real. What I mean by that is that in our culture when something is said enough times by somebody or the general population, it starts to become true in people’s minds.

There are so many lies that effect artists, especially young ones like myself who are forging their artistic path to success and accomplishment. And none of these have any basis in reality, nor will they make you any more successful in the long run. They are MYTHS, plain and simple. So let’s get to the list of what I believe are the most crippling ideas and beliefs in the world of art.

1. Never use hard edges in your work

2. Use a limited palette of colors when painting so that your paintings are more harmonious.

3. Paint what people like or what is trending, even if you don’t love it

4. Always use the 2/3 rule of composition

5. In order to be successful, you must DOMINATE social media

6. Good artist “make it” a lot quicker than other artists

7. You don’t have to work hard as an artist if you’re really good

8. You don’t have to paint everyday

9. Realism is the “best” style of art. That’s what makes a painting great

10. Never use your colors straight out of the tube

11. Never use pure Titanium white in your art

12. Black doesn’t exist in nature, so DON’T use it!

13. To be truly successful you have to follow pop culture

14. You only become famous after you die!

15. You won’t become rich from selling your art

16. Price for the market

17. Price your work compared to what other artists are selling for

18. Competition is important

19. Once you get into a gallery you are “set” for life!

20. If you build it, they will come

21. There are so many overnight successes and I can be one of them!

22. There are way too many seascape artists

23. There are way too many landscape artists

24. These paintings are BETTER than those ones

25. Palette knife art isn’t as good as brush work

26. The more details in a painting the better it is

27. You can use cheap materials and be taken serious as an artist

28. Artists don’t have to act professional

29. Artists don’t need to look presentable

30. Artists are lazy and rebellious

31. That is just a hobby!

32. Get a real job

And the list goes on an on….

So my point is, don’t let anybody tell you what you should, can, or cannot do. All of these lies are bogus and untrue, yet you will hear them used all the time. I’ve personally heard every single one of these statements uttered in the last year alone.

Good grief! Is it any wonder why so many artists are lost, confused, or depressed?

Success is a journey of faith, hope, persistence, and hard work. You have to believe in yourself and paint what you love in your core. I believe that EVERY artist can be a success if they really want to. It just takes a lot of time, unfortunately, and you can’t rush the process.

There are no quick fixes!

Happy Fall!

So in honor of fall I decided to paint a lovely beach painting with some colorful birch trees overlooking the mighty water. Fall has always been a special time of year for me, especially here in Michigan.

One of my favorite occasions growing up was when our mother used to take us to the apple orchard every year. We would go on hayrides, pick out plump pumpkins that were too heavy for us to carry, and of course, get some delicious cider and donuts.

Bring on the Moon

I’ve been working on a night series of beach paintings and it has been going very well. These are the first moonlit scenes that I have done! I love adding in the moon as the central focus and make it light up the entire scene. These paintings are very whimsical, mystical, and dramatic.

The best news is I think I’ve awakened something inside of me. I’ll be doing MANY more evening beaches in the future! After all, I am a creature of the night. Evening is my favorite time of day.

So it makes sense to bring the evening into my beach scenes, doesn’t it?!

A Canine in the Studio!

So a couple of months I adopted a toy Chihuahua from the Michigan Humane Society. She was in need of a home, and I happened to have a home to provide. So it really was the perfect match.

She is only 5 pounds, so needless to say she is a little furry gumdrop. She is such a little weirdo but grows on you pretty fast. I named her Star because there is something special about her and she is filled with radiant energy.

20170503_182645

Little Star doesn’t like to be in my art studio, so when I am working she will just squeak away incessantly to let her case be known. Or she’ll try to jump up in my lap when I am sitting on my stool at my easel, which of course doesn’t work well.

One time she even tried to jump onto my palette with my paint on it!

It has been an adventure so far having a dog again. Before her I hadn’t had a canine in the studio for seven years.

I have a new video on Youtube that I’m pretty excited about. Check it out when you get the time. It even has NEW background music! Heck yeah, man. You can view the actual painting on my Etsy shop below.

I’m also happy to report that I received 2 sales yesterday on my Etsy shop and have been getting wonderful traffic and interest! So that is very exciting. I know I’m on the right road, I just have to keep on growing my audience and getting more known.

But I shall get there…one sale, video, and blog post at a time!

Greener Scenery!

So my brand new studio is complete. The move went rather smoothly, if I must say. I’m so happy to now have a studio that I’m proud to be in. A place that is an extension of myself and my interests.

Before I reveal the new pictures, here is a picture of my old artistic station.

20170303_062411

Yikes! Pretty bland, huh? I won’t beat myself up though, as life is about getting better, right? That is the basis for personal development—GROWTH! That is what I preach in my youtube videos and I like to practice what I preach.

Hence why I chose to finally make my dream studio a reality.

Well, here is the my lovely new studio! Drumroll please……

New Studio 3

New Studio 4

Now THIS is what I’m talking about!

As you can see I decorated my new habitat with a beach theme throughout, which really inspires me to paint the beach even more. I also have some personal development quotes on the wall, as well as some Disney decor. After all, I am a HUGE fan of Disney’s animation studio.

I am really loving my new beachy art studio! If you haven’t watched my interview video on youtube, here you go.

I’m also working to expand my contact list for my monthly newsletter. You can sign up on my website at
