Realistic Art

In my Youtube videos I often talk about realistic paintings and how they aren’t better than other styles of painting. How would I know this? Because I used to be a realistic painter! In fact, people often mistook my artwork for photographs, especially at art fairs and gallery exhibitions.

My Days of Realism

As you can see, my old style was hyper realistic. Very life-like! It required brushes, meticulous blending effects, and LONG hours to achieve this style of painting. People seemed to be blown away by it, but there was just something missing. Keep reading to find out what.

A New Life, by *Knife!*

And here is a new painting in my current impressionistic style with palette knives. You can see some notable differences, can’t you? 🙂 First of all, these works are much more expressive. They have more charm, character, and life to them. The colors and textures really “pop.” This style is more painterly, and thus, evokes a stronger emotion than my old works did.

A Taste of Paradise

*The truth about realism in art*

Too many times you’ll here people say that they love a painting and that it is “very good.” When you press them for a reason, they will often say “because it looks SO real!” In other words, these people equate talent with making something look real.

The problem with that way of thinking is that it undermines all the artists out there (myself included) who have the techniques to paint realistic, but prefer not to do so. Realism is just one style of art, not the only style, and it is certainly not any better than other styles like abstract art, impressionistic, pop art, etc.

I often laugh when I think about my old style of art. After all, if I cared that badly about making something look true to life, I should have just taken a photograph! Can you feel me?
